It has been a long time since we stayed at an Airbnb. It is usually not our first preference when it comes to traveling. We prefer the convenience of booking hotels or serviced apartments through Booking.com. However for our Italy holiday, one of our Instagram followers recommend us to check out Airbnb options in Florence as the place she stayed previously has beautiful views of The Duomo. And so we stumbled upon:  “Renaissance Apartment in Historic Building with Duomo Views”

Long story short: Florence was our BEST Airbnb experience to date!

The Superhosts; Vasily and Irina were super quick responding to our messages, and they were very kind to allow us an early check in at 10:00am. Irina gave us background history of the apartment, and provided us with a map and recommendations on where to eat. Having this interaction and advice from your Airbnb host is always a big plus.

This is the most expensive Airbnb we have ever stayed in and it was worth every single cent.

The Florence apartment is full of history and character. The building dates back from 13th century and architect of The Duomo, Filippo Brunelleschi apparently stayed in this building during its construction. The interior is decorated in renaissance style throughout. Everywhere we looked, from floor all the way to ceiling, art, art and more beautiful art. Views of The Duomo from the living room and bedroom were just spectacular. There’s a LOT for the eyes to take in, but we loved every inch of this place and we felt like we stayed inside a painting.

Since we’ve had such an amazing stay, here are Letsgobeartravels quick tips to choosing an Airbnb:

Before you book:

  • Stay at a Superhost property. Filter your search to “Superhost” only – these are experienced hosts who are well and truly trusted. Superhosts will have a badge symbol next to their profile.
  • Read the description carefully, and read the fine prints. Know exactly what you will be renting – is it the entire place? Or just a Private room in a shared house? Will you be sharing a common area?
  • Make sure there’s enough space for everyone to have a good sleep. Try to keep the same sleeping configuration as you would back home. For us this means finding an extra bed for our son.
  • Know the amenities you’re getting such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning and kitchen.  If you plan to cook, will you have all the equipment needed? Dining in is a great option to save money while you travel.

  • Note any additional charges, such as cleaning and service fees.
  • Which level is it on? Is the apartment on ground floor? 5th floor? Does it have elevator? Climbing up multiple flight of stairs while carrying heavy luggage is not fun.
  • Airbnb may NOT always be cheaper than hotels. So consider your options, and check out our favourite booking site Booking.com for comparisons.
  • Check the cancellation policy.
  • Last but not least: Read other traveler’s reviews – Don’t be lazy

Before your arrival:

  • Ask the host of any queries you may have. Never assume they can accommodate all your needs.
  • As there is no 24 hour reception, set a time to meet up with your host.
  • Note down the property address and contact details of your host.

When you stay:

  • Be respectful of the property. This is someone else’s home. Treat it like you would your house. Wash up the dishes after use, put away the rubbish. Don’t leave trails of messes for your host to clean up.
  • Remember your host can also leave a rating for you.

After your stay:

  • Leave a review for your host and share your experience

Including Florence we have used Airbnb 3 times (our first experience being in Frankfurt) and all were positive experiences. Unfortunately we have also heard of other travelling families’ bad experiences. From not having the place properly cleaned up to having the place double booked!
