After going on 3 big trips with our toddler, we felt confident that we can pack lighter and smarter for this 2 weeks winter travel to England. The average day temperature in England (mid January) was around 6 degrees Celsius. Some early mornings were quite frosty and went down to -3 degrees. Overall the weather is not that much different from our winter in Perth (except we still get blue skies daily!). So for this trip we did not have to purchase new winter clothing such as merino thermals or a snowsuit like the previous year when we visited Germany & France. His winter wear from back home is sufficient.

For this toddler winter travel packing list, we brought 2 big luggages, one hand carry and one backpack. The hand carry was needed to store our coats for arrival in Manchester. Our 23 months old son by this stage didn’t require many toys to keep him happy. He only had a few of his favourite Hot Wheels cars with him throughout the 21 hour plane journey. He was way more interested in the flight entertainment system. His necessities were packed into the backpack along with his Gerber Puffs snacks and change of clothes.

This is how we mostly dressed our son during the Winter England trip:

Top

First layer: singlet, long sleeve top

Second layer: knitted jumper

Third layer: wool coat or down coat (both has hoods – important to protect the ears as it gets very windy at times) & gloves

Bottom

First layer: cotton leggings

Second layer: Fleece or corduroy pants, socks & boots

Whenever we entered a museum, we would take off some layers off him. We normally would take off his pants (leaving just the leggings on him), and his coat. Our son hates being over heated and at times he would take of his boots too!

This time around we only stocked one week worth of nappies from home. Halfway through our trip, we had the chance to visit a Tesco supermarket in Oxford. We were so shocked to find the cost of nappies is a lot cheaper than back home! Not only that, at checkout, the lady mentioned they had a Buy 1 get 1 Free promotion on Pampers nappies. Since we didn’t want to bring unnecessary extra load home with us, we decided to give away the one free box of nappies to the checkout lady who has a 3 year old boy. Win-win situation for both of us!

As our son reached toddler age, we noticed that the necessities we needed to bring on a daily basis is a LOT lighter. Less nappy changes and fewer chances of leaks, so we didn’t need to bring as many spare clothes throughout the day.

Although in saying that, one day in London, Tara forgot to bring spare pants and that happened to be the day our son peed all over himself! But no need to panic, in a place like London it’s a good excuse to go shopping. Being mid January the sales were on, so we couldn’t help to splurge a bit.
